Takeoff
Birds that nest in the reeds along river banks do not appreciate visits from Great Blue Herons, even when the heron is innocently hunting fish. Herons are known to eat just about anythng, including chicks. So this female red-winged blackbird in frames two and three took matters into her own 'hands' and attacked the heron. The heron decided that life was becoming just a little too hot and took off. This entire sequence lasted less than ten seconds. In the first frame, the heron is already agitated, having repeatedly been attacked already in the moments before the photograph was made. I was taken by surprise, but not unprepared.
